Box Score 2 The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to 20th ranked Adrian on Friday afternoon.
Calvin dropped the opener 10-2 and then fell 10-9 in game two.
GAME ONE
Adrian 10, Calvin 2
The Bulldogs started the scoring in the first game by putting a run on the board in the first inning. In the third inning, Adrian continued to add runs to its lead by scoring four runs and making it a 5-0 lead. The Knights finally got on scoreboard as senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) hit a sacrifice fly to center while Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) scored.
Adrian had the bats going again in the fifth and sixth inning as they scored five more runs to extend its lead to 10-1. Calvin struggled to get hits throughout the game but was able to add another run on a hit and an Adrian error to make it a 10-2 game. The strong pitching of the Bulldogs kept the bats of the Knights in check, and they held on to win 10-2 in the first game.
GAME TWO
Adrian 10, Calvin 9
The second game again saw Adrian jumping out to an early lead 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Bulldogs added to their lead with a big second inning by scoring six runs and making it a 7-0 game heading into the bottom of the second. Calvin responded with a big rally in the bottom of the second. It started with Andrew Ballenger (Columbus, OH / Cuyahoga CC) getting walked with the bases loaded then J.C Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) hitting a sac fly to left field.
Dylan Williams (Cedar Springs, MI / Cedar Springs), Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) and Padilla each hit RBI singles during Calvin's huge rally. Junior Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL / Glenbard West) hit an RBI double to score two more runs while Hung hit a sac fly to center to help complete the nine-run inning for Calvin and give them a 9-7 lead.
The next three innings both pitchers, shut out the opposition. Junior Eli Johnson (Stillwater, OK / Stillwater) pitched a great couple innings with two strikeouts and only allowing three hits.
Unfortunately for the Knights, Adrian scored two runs on wild pitches to tie the game 9-9 in the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs hit a solo homer to take the 10-9 lead. Calvin wasn't able to get anything going in the bottom of the seventh and fell to Adrian 10-9.
