Box Score OLIVET, Mich. - Calvin completed a four-game series sweep of Olivet with a 10-5 victory over Olivet Monday afternoon. Monday's game marked the completion of a game originally suspended on Saturday with Calvin leading 3-0 after three innings of play of the second game of a doubleheader.
Junior Hayden White (Spring Valley, Ca./Grossmont HS) tossed three innings of no-hit ball on Saturday and came back on Monday to give the Knights two more innings to pick up the win. Freshman Brayden Schoonbeck (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) came on for the final two innings and kept Olivet at bay to preserve the win.
Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) had a pair of run-scoring doubles to help stake the Knights to a 6-0 lead.
Olivet cut the deficit in half with three runs in the fifth but the Knights answered with three runs in the sixth as junior Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS) singled in one run and junior Ryan Peterson (Glen Ellyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) singled in two more.
Sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) doubled in an insurance run in the sixth. The Comets scored two in the seventh but did no further damage.
Calvin had seven players with two hits apiece with Hung driving in three and Vogel and Peterson driving in two runs each.
COACHES COMMENT: "It feels good to close out a four-game sweep," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "Hayden White was admirable, going on one-day's rest to give us five full innings and Brayden Schoonbeck completed the job. We had some timely hitting and stepped up when Olivet pushed us. Anytime you can finish off a four-game series, sweep, it's a good day."
NEXT UP: Calvin now owns a five-game win streak and is 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA. The Knights host league-leading Adrian on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
