Box Score OLIVET, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team took game one in a doubleheader against Olivet with a score of 9-5. Game 2 had the Knights leading 6-0 in the fourth inning before it was suspended due to weather.
In game one, the Knights jumped out to 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Senior Andrew Hung (Waterford, MI / Waterford Mott) scored on a wild pitch to start the scoring for the Knights. Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) laid down a beautiful RBI bunt to score Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) while J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) scored on error to give Calvin a 3-0 lead after two.
Calvin scored another run in the third thanks to a fielder's choice, but Olivet hit a two-run homerun in to make it a 4-2 game heading to the fourth inning. Sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lurtheran North) hit a two-run RBI double and senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) hit an RBI double in the top of the fourth to extend Calvin's lead to 7-2. Calvin added two more runs in the fifth thanks to Warners with an RBI single and Penn with a sac fly.
The Knights gained a 9-2 lead, but the Comets started battling back and score three runs in the fifth and sixth inning. Junior Eli Johnson (Stillwater, OK / Stillwater) came into the bottom of the seventh and got the save for the Knights. Calvin holds on to win 9-5 in game one. Senior Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and got the win, bumping his season record to 1-0. VanDyken struck out two and walked one. He scattered five hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The second game saw the Knights grabbing an early lead in the first. Junior Nick Vogel hit an RBI single to left and Hung had a two-run RBI double to center field to give them a 3-0 lead after the first. Calvin picked up the scoring in the third with another RBI double by Hung and Dylan Williams hitting an RBI single to left. Fortmann put the ball in play to score Raymond and give the Knights a 6-0 lead after three innings.
Game two was suspended due to inclement weather at the top of the fourth and will be picked up Monday at 4:30 p.m. at Olivet.
