Calvin Baseball Climbs Past Comets - Bumps Win Streak to Three Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin swept a doubleheader from visiting Olivet Friday afternoon, downing the Comets 17-12 and 19-2. The Knights now own a modest three-game win streak and are 9-7 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA.

In the first game, Calvin scored the first runs of the game right away in the first inning. Sophomore Caden Penn (Macomb, MI / Lutheran North) and Senior Ricky Padilla (Poway, CA / Poway) each hit an RBI single to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. The Comets answered right back with two runs in the second while Matt Raymond (Chicago, IL / Loyola Academy) hit a homer to left make it a 3-2 after two innings of play.

Olivet came right back and scored three runs in the third and one in the fifth to take a 7-3 lead. The Knights retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with Nick Vogel (Hartford, WI / Hartford) hitting an RBI double. This gave Calvin an 8-7 lead after five innings of play. Olivet wasn't backing down after scoring five in the top of the sixth to retake the lead 12-8.

Calvin fought back into the game with a huge bottom of the sixth inning. They scored nine runs with plays from Carson Warners (Grand Rapids, MI / Grand Rapids Christian) who had an RBI double and J.C. Fortmann (Elgin, IL / Elgin) who belted an RBI single to help them retake a 17-12. The Knights held on to win with a score of 17-12.

Freshman Jake Monroe (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) picked up the win in relief to run his record to 2-1 on the season.

In the second game, Calvin used its momentum from the first game to jump out to a big early lead. Senior Damion Pompey (Edwardsburg, MI / Edwardsburg) homered to left field to start the scoring for the Knights. Calvin kept up the offensive pressure, building a 15-0 lead capped off by a Dylan Williams (Cedar Springs, MI / Cedar Springs) three-run homerun. Olivet struggled to get the bats going as Zach Thor (Woodbury, MN / New Life Academy) was shutting them out.

Calvin added four more runs that included home runs from Vogel and Nate Mason (Portage, MI / Portage Northern). Thor pitched a complete game as the Knights pulled away for the win 19-2. Vogel and Pompey each finished with three hits while Ryan Petersen (Glen Ellyn, IL Glenbard West), Penn, and Warners each had two hits in the game.

Thor got the win to bump his season record to 2-2. He struck out seven while walking only two.

UP NEXT: Calvin will travel to Olivet tomorrow for a double header with game one starting at noon.
