Calvin Men's Tennis Has Saturday Split - Defeats Concordia - Falls at Illinois Tech

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin moved to 4-3 on the year with a Saturday split, defeating Concordia of Michigan 8-1 Saturday afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights then hopped in vans to the south side of Chicago for a late Saturday evening match at Illinois Tech with the Knights falling by a 6-3 score.

CALVIN 8, CONCONCORDIA 1

Calvin rolled to an 8-1 win over the visiting Cardinals by taking two of the three doubles points. Senior Owen Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) and senior Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Ca./San Dimas HS) winning 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while senior Jose' Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose') winning 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

The Knights then claimed all six singles points. Larrea defeated Edgar Bautista 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while senior Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Il./Glenbrook South HS) was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles.

Brookhouse defeated Ryan Curtis 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Benzel topped Adam Dimaggio 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Senior Daniel Huan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) picked up a win at No. 5 singles, defeating Jacob Gerace 6-0, 6-1. Junior Lucas Shupbach (Paw Paw, Mich./Paw Paw HS) came up a winner at No. 6 singles, winning 6-3, 6-4.

ILLINOIS TECH 6, CALVIN 3

Calvin dropped a late-high 6-3 decision to the Scarlet Hawks Saturday night inside the XS-Tennis Center on the south side of Chicago.

The Knights opened by taking two of the three doubles points. Larrea and junior Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Roman Shislov and Alann Torres. Brookhouse and Benzel then teamed up for a win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Adam Laitinen and Brody Croonquist 8-6.

Illinois Tech then took five of the six singles points. Brookhouse was Calvin's lone singles winner, defeating Andy Fang 6-3, 7-6 at No. 4 singles.

Calvin is back in action on March 23 when it takes on Lawrence (Wisc.) and Luther (Ia.) in a pair of non-conference matches in Orlando, Florida.
