Calvin Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill at Olivet

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

OLIVET, Mich. - Calvin split a doubleheader with Olivet on Saturday as the Knights took three of four games in the weekend series. Calvin is now in fifth place in the MIAA standings at 10-14 in league play.

GAME ONE
Calvin 8, Olivet 1

Calvin rode the right arm of senior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) and rapped out eight hits while using four Olivet errors to claim the victory. Francisco struck out a career-high 10 batters while walking only one. Francisco (3-5) also scattered five hits while picking up the complete-game victory.

Calvin (15-20 overall) broke the game open with a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-run RBI single by junior Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS). Marshall and freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) both finished with two hits. Sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) had a double as did junior Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS).

GAME TWO
Olivet 3, Calvin 2

Calvin tied the game with a two-run rally in the ninth but Olivet was able to come back to win the game with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th to salvage a doubleheader split.

Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, Calvin scored a run on an RBI groundout by Clark. With two outs, senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) delivered an RBI single to right to plate Padilla who had reached base on a double. Olivet threatened to win the game in the bottom of the ninth but left the bases full.

In the top of the 11th, senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) singled and reached third with two outs but was eventually stranded. The Comets then won the game in the bottom half, using a one-out single, a wild pitch and a two-out single to plate across the winning run.

Redfield and Hung had two hits apiece. Using a bullpen by committee, Calvin used seven pitchers in the contest while Olivet starter Zac Walter went 10.1 innings, striking out nine and walking none. Calvin junior Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss for the Knights in relief. Paauwe went the final 2.1 innings in relief.

NEXT UP: Calvin will open a four-game conference series against Alma next Friday when it hosts the Scots in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
