Box Score 2 KALAMAZOO - Kalamazoo took both ends of a doubleheader with Kalamazoo on Monday to claim a 2-2 series split with the Knights.
GAME ONE
Kalamazoo 8, Calvin 6
Kalamazoo scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning and held off a late Calvin comeback effort to claim the win. Calvin scored a run in the third, four in the fifth and one in the sixth but came up short as Kalamazoo reaped the benefit of four Calvin errors that led to four unearned runs.
Calvin outhit Kalamazoo 10-9. Freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) went 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had two hits and RBI while senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) had a double.
Senior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) took the loss, striking out two and walking two in four innings of work. Junior Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) and senior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) both tossed an inning of relief.
GAME TWO
Kalamazoo 12, Calvin 4
Kalamazoo collected eight hits, eight walks and used four Calvin errors to pull away for the win.
Calvin (11-19 overall, 7-13 MIAA) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second but the Hornets (10-19 overall, 8-12 MIAA) scored two runs in the bottom of the second and added three more in the fourth to regain the momentum.
Freshmen Nick Vogel (Hartford, Wisc./Hartford HS)) and Ryan Peterson (Glen Elyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) had two hits apiece. Ryan Pena also had a double. Freshman Haynden White () took the loss on the mound, striking out two and walking three.
NEXT UP: Calvin will open up a four-game series with Olivet on Friday with a home doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
