ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin took both games of a Thursday doubleheader at Trine, winning game one 9-8 and game two 12-2.

Calvin featured clutch hitting on the afternoon as 16 of the 21 runs scored by the Knights came with two outs. Calvin improves to 7-8 overall and more importantly to 3-3 in league play.

GAME ONE
Calvin 9, Trine 8

Calvin erupted for eight runs in the third but Trine answered back with eight runs of its own in the fifth. The Knights then pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout by sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS). Calvin's bullpen then buckled down to keep the Trine bats at bay with freshman Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) picking up his first collegiate win while junior Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tossed a scoreless frame in the seventh to pick up the save.

Sophomore Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the first 4.1 innings for Calvin, chewing up valuable innings on an afternoon when the Knights were playing their fifth and sixth games of the week.

Padilla, freshman Andrew Hung (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott HS) and junior Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) strung together run-scoring singles in Calvin's eight-run third inning. Freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) had an RBI single, senior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) a two-run RBI single and junior Quinn Hyndiuk (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) an RBI double. All eight runs in the inning came with two outs.

Calvin collected 13 hits in the victory with Hyndiuk, Padilla, Marshall and senior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) recording two hits apiece. Both of Hyndiuk's hits were doubles.

GAME TWO
Calvin 12, Trine 2

Calvin pounded out a season-high 17 hits in racing to the 12-2 victory in a game that was shortened to eight innings due to darkness.

The Knights scored two in the second, three in the third and five in the fifth before adding single runs in the seventh and eighth.

Senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) had three hits including a double and scored three runs. Hung was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Hyndiuk had two hits including another double. Redfield, Marshall and sophomore Mitch Mustert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had two hits as well.

On a day when the Knights were strapped for pitching, freshman Hayden White (Spring Valley, Ca./Grossmont HS) got the start and tossed six strong innings, allowing only one run and four hits to pick up his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Peter VanDyken (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Mike Kool () both tossed one inning of relief.

COACHES QUOTE: "Our guys were a really resilient group today," said Calvin head baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "After a disappointing Tuesday and giving up an eight-run lead in the first game today, we could have folded but we fought back and I'm proud of my team for that. On offense we had big two-out production which was huge. Equally as huge was our pitching. We needed our young guys to give us a chance and they did just that. This was a big pick-me-up day. The challenge now is to continue the momentum."
