Calvin Baseball Splits Saturday Set Against Hoosier State Foes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Calvin split a pair of Saturday games against Indiana opposition, defeating Rose-Hulman 11-7 and falling to DePauw 12-1. The Knights are now 3-3 on the year heading into a four-day trip to Tennessee and Georgia.

GAME ONE
Calvin 11, Rose-Hulman 7

Less than 24 hours after falling to Rose-Hulman 3-2, Calvin turned the tables on the Fightin Engineers with a seven-run third inning. The third-inning outburst gave Calvin an 8-0 lead and enough cushion to hold on for the win. Rose-Hulman (5-4) came up with five runs late to close to within three but the Knights scored three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to help seal the win.

Junior Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had two hits and three RBI. Senior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./Junipero Serra Catholic HS) had two hits and scored a run. Freshman Ryan Petersen (Glen Elyn, Il./Glenbard West HS) had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.

Senior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base four times with a hit and three walks. Freshman Matt Raymond (Chicago, Il./Loyola Academy) had two RBI, two hits and a base on balls.

Senior Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple Kellogg HS) got the start and threw five shutout innings to run his season record to 1-1. Freshman Jacob Schuurman (Oakville, Ont./Great Lakes Canadians) and junior Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) came on in relief with Kool picking up the save.

GAME TWO
DePauw 12, Calvin 1

DePauw banged out 14 hits in gaining a 12-1 victory over Calvin. Calvin's lone run came in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS). Four different pitchers saw time on the hill for the Knights. Freshman Zach Thor (Woodbury, Mn./New Life Academy) got the start and took the loss. DePauw starter Grant Rademacher had a strong outing for the Tigers, striking out 11 without a walk in 7.2 innings of work.

COACHES QUOTE: "We had a good win to start the day," said Calvin baseball coach Kevin VanDuyn. "We were aggressive at the plate, made some things happen on the basepaths and got an early lead. It was important that we kept working for runs and was glad to see us get a few more in the ninth. In the game against DePauw, we ran into an excellent pitcher and we were a little out of gas after playing four games in three days. We'll regroup this weekend and get ready for a new challenge on Monday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Tennessee on Monday for a 7 p.m. contest at Maryville College. The Knights will face Maryville again on Tuesday at 7 before traveling south to Georgia for a Wednesday date at Covenant College in Georgia.
