Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Alma on Senior Day Saturday afternoon to clinch a spot in the upcoming double-elimination MIAA Tournament. The Knights dropped the opener 5-4 but came back to win an important game two 10-7.

The Knights will travel to Adrian on Wednesday for a first round MIAA Tournament game Wednesday at 3 p.m. with Hope traveling to Alma for Wednesday's other first round game. Adrian is the top seed and will host MIAA Tournament play from Thursday through the remainder of the tournament.

In game one Saturday against Alma, Calvin fell behind 3-0 early but came back with four runs in the bottom of the second on RBI singles by sophomore Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS), sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS).

Alma's Matt Minaudo hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game 4-4 and then singled in an unearned run in the sixth with two outs that gave the Scots a 5-4 lead.

Calvin placed the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh as freshman Mitch Mustert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) reached base on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and then moved to third after tagging up on a fly ball hit to right.

Mustert was stranded at third however as Alma starter Dylan Dzendzel got a game-ending strikeout to quell the Calvin threat.

Dzendsel limited Calvin to just five hits. One of the hits was a double by senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) that allowed him to become the Calvin career leader in two base hits with 40.

Sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) took the loss to fall to 4-4 on the season.

In game two, Alma (23-17 overall, 16-12 MIAA) scored three runs in the top of the first but Calvin (16-23 overall, 14-14 MIAA) scored two runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Padilla tied the game with a solo home run to leadd off the bottom of the third. In the process, he extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

Junior Ryan Pena (La Forest, Ca./J. Serra Catholic HS) drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout.

Alma's Vann Acker launched a grand slam homer in the top of the fifth to give the Scots a 7-4 lead.

Marshall got Calvin closer with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. The Knights then erupted for five runs in the sixth, using three hits and two Alma errors to grab a 10-7 lead. Marshall had a run-scoring double in the five-run rally.

Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) came on in relief of freshman starter Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and tossed three innings of scoreless relief.

VanDuyn came on in the ninth and pitched a scoreless frame to collect his third save of the season. Walker picked up the win to improve to 2-6 on the year.

Calvin had 13 hits in the win led by Marshall who was 4-for-4 with two RBI. Pena was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI while sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) was 3-for-4. Junior Jonathan Keeane had a triple and scored three runs.

In between games one and two, Calvin celebrated its graduating seniors who were playing in their final games at home.
