ADRIAN, Mich. - The 2018 Calvin baseball season came to a close with a 5-4 loss to rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament Thursday afternoon.

Calvin (16-25) grabbed a 2-0 lead on RBI singles by juniors Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) and Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS).

Hope came back with a run in the top of the second and added four in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead.

Calvin chipped into the deficit on an RBI single by Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) in the fifth and a sacrifice fly by senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) in the sixth.

Calvin placed two runners aboard with no outs in the seventh but did not bring home the tying run. In the eighth, Calvin again stranded two runners and then went down in order in the ninth.

The Knights had 12 hits in the loss but left 11 runners on base.

Freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) went 2-for-5 in the loss to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Padilla will carry the hitting streak into the 2019 season. DeZwaan closed out his Calvin career with three hits.

DeZwaan finished his Calvin career with 160 hits and a batting average of .311. He now ranks fourth on the Calvin career list for hits. Padilla finished the year with 60 hits which matches the fourth-best single-season mark in Calvin baseball history.

Sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) took the loss to fall to 4-5 on the year. VanDuyn struck out three and walked one.

The 2018 MIAA Tournament marked the fifth time Calvin has reached the conference tournament including the fourth time in the last five years.
