Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team picked up a big win in the MIAA race on Saturday afternoon against Olivet. Calvin defeated Olivet 1-0 in game one to take the first three games of the series from Olivet. The Comets took the final game of the series, 14-11.
The Knights held only to only two hits in game one.
The lone run came from junior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian) with a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning that scored senior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) from second base.
Sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) picked up his fourth win of the season and finished with six strikeouts.
Senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) finished the game with three hits.
Calvin jumped on Olivet early in game two with five runs in the first inning.
With the bases loaded, Ryan Pena was hit by a pitch that scored sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East). Sophomore Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) then doubled to center field to score junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Calif./Poway). Sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) single to the shortstop that sent in Ryan Pena. Beau Redfield then doubled into the gap in right-center to score Clark.
Freshman Mitch Mustert (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) added to the lead with a two-run blast in the third inning.
The Comets cut into the lead with two runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Ricky Padilla singled to second base and the throw was off target to score Mitch Mustert and Beau Redfield.
The eighth inning was unkind to Calvin and saw the Comets score eight runs.
The Knights were able to get two runs back in the eighth in Ryan Pena and Kyle Houts.
Ricky Padilla and Beau Redfield both posted four hits in game two.
Calvin is scheduled to return to play on Friday at Alma.
