Box Score 2 KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at Kalamazoo Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in eight innings and then dropping the nightcap 6-5.
The Hornets used late-inning rallies in both games to sting the Knights twice.
In game one, Calvin (11-17 overall, 10-10 MIAA) led 3-1 after five innings of play. Freshman Mitch Mustert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled in a run in the second. Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) roped an RBI single in the third and followed with an RBI double in the fifth.
Kalamazoo's Alex Fultz belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game 3-3.
The Hornets then brought in pitching ace Ryan Orr for the final two innings. Calvin remained in the game by stranding a pair of Kalamazoo runners in the bottom of the seventh but the Hornets broke through with a two-out rally in the eighth using sandwiching two hits around a Calvin error to plate the game-winning run.
Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) took the hard-luck loss in relief of sophomore starter Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). VanDuyn went the first six innings and scattered five hits.
Pena had two of Calvin's seven hits. Sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS), freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS), Pena and Mustert all had doubles.
Pena and Mustert also each stole a base.
In game two, Calvin built a 5-2 lead through five innings. Calvin picked up two runs in the second as sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had a sacrifice fly and senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) had a RBI single. In the fifth, sophomore Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) had a run-scoring single and Marshall doubled home two more. The Hornets choked off more damage however by throwing a Calvin runner out at the plate attempting to score after tagging up on a fly ball.
Calvin's lead did not last as Kalamazoo broke through with four runs on five hits in the sixth inning including a two-out bases-loaded that brought home the go-ahead run.
Kalamazoo sealed the win by retiring the Knights in order in the top of the seventh.
Kalamazoo outhit Calvin 15-8 in the game two win. Walker (1-5) took the loss in relief with the game-winning run proving to be an unearned run.
Freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and went 3.2 innings. Sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) went the next 1.2 innings before giving way to Walker in the bottom of the sixth.
Padilla and junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had two hits apiece.
Calvin returns to action April 25 when it hosts Defiance University in a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
