Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin split a conference doubleheader with Kalamazoo Friday afternoon, winning the opener 5-4 and losing game two 17-8.
Calvin took game one behind the pitching tandem of junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) and sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). Keane (3-1) went six innings to pick up the victory while VanDuyn came on to pitch a scoreless seventh to claim his second save of the season.
The Knights scored all five of their runs in the second inning. Sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) collected an RBI single to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) followed with a run-scoring double. Keane then helped his own cause by launching a three-run homer to left. The home run was the fourth of the season for Keane.
Kalamazoo (11-14 overall, 9-7 MIAA) chipped into the Calvin lead with a run in the third and three runs in the fourth. Keane tossed scoreless frames in the fifth and sixth and VanDuyn finished the job with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-3 to lead an eight-hit Calvin attack. Senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) also launched a double in the win.
In game two, Kalamazoo erupted for 19 hits. The Hornets took control of the game with a nine-run fourth inning. Calvin had 10 hits in the loss and put up three runs in the fourth and four in the seventh.
DeZwaan went 3-for-5 in the loss to boost his season batting average to .340 including his conference batting average to .466. Padilla went 2-for-5 with a double. Keane and Hyndiuk also had doubles while junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) belted a two-run RBI triple.
Calvin committed four errors in the loss which led to 10 unearned runs scored by Kalamazoo.
The Knights are now 12-16 overall and 10-8 in the MIAA heading into a Saturday doubleheader at Kalamazoo scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
