Calvin Baseball Drops Doubleheader at League-Leading Adrian Friday Night

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader Friday night at Adrian, falling by scores of 5-1 and 8-0.

In game one, Adrian (20-5 overall, 14-2 MIAA) broke loose for a four-run inning in the bottom of the first, using four hits including a bases-loaded triple by Brady Wood to build a 4-0 lead. Adrian added a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights (11-15 overall, 9-7 MIAA) kept clawing away against Adrian senior All-American righthander Tommy Parsons. Calvin finished the game with six hits and broke through for a run in the top of the seventh as junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) led off the inning with a single and later scored on a passed ball.

With two runners aboard, Parsons was able to stymie the Calvin scoring threat with a game-ending strikeout.

Parsons struck out 10 batters without a walk but Calvin sophomore righthander Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had a strong outing of his own, striking out eight batters in six innings of work while allowing only three hits over his final five innings of work.

Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) was 2-for-3 while senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had a double.

In game two, Adrian used small ball to its advantage as the Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning, using two bunt singles, two sacrifice bunts, an error and a run-scoring double.

Adrian added two in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh to build its final eight-run cushion.

Calvin turned three double-plays on defense in the loss and rapped out seven hits.

Keane, freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) and senior Ryan Stewart (Shelby, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) all had two hits apiece.

Keane and Stewart both had doubles for the Knights.

Freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and went 4.1 innings, striking out four and walking three. Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS). sophomore Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centerville HS) and sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) all saw time in relief.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it opens a four-game MIAA weekend series with Kalamazoo with the Knights set to host the Hornets on Friday in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
