Men's Tennis Tramples Olivet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team remained in the driver's seat in the MIAA with a 9-0 victory over Olivet on Tuesday afternoon. The sun shined on the Knights as they improved to 14-2 on the year and 4-0 in the MIAA. With Kalamazoo ineligible for the MIAA Tournament, the Knights remain a match ahead of Adrian at 3-1. The 9-0 victory is the eighth sweep of the season for Calvin.

"It was nice to be able to play outside today," said head coach John Ross. "We were able to get another MIAA victory today and that is always nice. We now have a very tough match ahead with Kalamazoo."

Sophomore Kyrus Tsai (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and freshman Avery Holt (Aurora, Ill./Matea Valley) struck first for the Knights at No. 3 doubles, the duo downed Ben Morris and Tyler Noble, 8-2.

The senior team Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) bounced Zach Croze and Drew Gilmer at No. 1 doubles, 8-2.

Junior Charlie Fahr (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa East) and sophomore Cobe Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./ San Dimas) finished off Noah Bindschatel and Donald Doyle at No. 2 doubles, 8-6.

The bottom half of the Calvin singles lineup was very consistent on Tuesday. Charlie Fahr, Avery Holt and Cobe Benzel won, 6-1, 6-0.

Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) defeated Drew Gilmer at No. 2 single, 6-0, 6-1.

Max Stallings sank Noah Bindschatel at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0.

Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán topped Zachary Croze at No. 1 single, 6-2, 6-1 to finish the sweep.

The Knights return to the courts on Saturday in a battle of first place in the MIAA against Kalamazoo.
