Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin concluded a four-games series with Trine University, splitting a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

Calvin (7-11 overall, 5-3 MIAA) took the opener 3-2 and lost the nightcap 7-5.

The Knights took three of the four games in the series after sweeping a Thursday doubleheader from Trine in Grand Rapids.

Calvin currently sits in second place in the MIAA league standings.

In game one, Calvin received a superb pitching performance from sophomore right hander Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). VanDuyn tossed a seven-inning complete-game victory to up his season record to 2-2 while lowering his earned run average to 3.79. VanDuyn struck out a career-high 11 batters while walking only two.

Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) put Calvin up 2-0 with a two-run homer, also plating sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) who led off the game with a walk.

Keane then doubled in third and came home on an RBI single by junior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.

Trine (8-9 overall, 2-6 MIAA) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth but left the bases full as VanDuyn came up with a clutch inning-ending strikeout.

VanDuyn struck out the side in the sixth and closed out the game with a strikeout with the tying run on second base.

Keane, Kuperus and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) all had two hits apiece.

In game two, Calvin trailed 2-0 through four innings but came up with a four-run fifth keyed by a two-run RBI double by Hyndiuk and an RBI double by senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS).

Trine came up with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights came back with a run in the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore Sam Schellenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS).

Calvin's 5-3 lead was quickly erased however as Trine scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way to claim the victory.

Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) was 2-for-2 for the Knights. Sophomore Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and gave Calvin four strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing only two runs.

Calvin used four relief pitchers in the game two defeat with freshman Chris Ralph (Naperville, Il./Waubonsie Valley HS) taking the loss for the Knights.

Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts Albion in a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.
