Calvin Baseball Downs Dutchmen - Clipped by Kalamazoo in MIAA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin bowed out of the MIAA Tournament by splitting a pair of games on Thursday at Adrian's Nicolay Field.

Calvin (20-23) opened the day with an 18-2 victory over rival Hope but then fell 2-1 to Kalamazoo Thursday evening.

In the win over Hope, Calvin erupted for a season-high 26 hits. Hope scored two in the top of the first but the Knights scored eight in the bottom half of the frame and never looked back from there.

Junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Ca./Whittier HS) had a career-day, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and seven runs batted in. Senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) was also superb, going 5-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored. Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) was 4-for-6 with four RBI and two doubles.

Senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids HS) and sophomore Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) had three hits apiece. Junior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and freshman Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) had two hits each.

Keane (5-4) was stellar on the mound, tossing seven innings to pick up his fourth consecutive victory in a starting role. Freshman Micah Berlage (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) tossed two shutout innings of relief to close out the win.

In game two, Calvin managed only four hits against Kalamazoo and left eight runners on base. The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the fifth as Salgado doubled to left-center and scored on a single by Houts.

Kalamazoo tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the eighth, Calvin loaded the bases with one out but did not push across the go-ahead run.

Kalamazoo won the game in walk-off fashion as a one-out double scored the winning run from first base.

Houts had two of Calvin's four hits. Freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) tossed seven strong innings, allowing only one run and striking out four. Sophomore Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) took the loss in defeat for the Knights to dip to 4-3 on the season.

Kalamazoo advances to the MIAA Tournament final on Friday against host Adrian and will need to win twice on Friday to win the league tournament.

The loss concludes the collegiate careers for Calvin seniors Colton Wolfe, Mike Kempton, and Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS).

With the win over Hope, Calvin hit the 20-win plateau for the third time in four years.
