Calvin Baseball Mauls Manchester

Box Score

MANCHESTER, Ind. - The Calvin baseball team evened its season record 16-16 and stretched its win streak to four games with a 16-12 victory at Manchester University Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin used seven pitchers and rapped out 15 hits to win the slugfest. Sophomore Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two runs driven in.

Senior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS), junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS), sophomore Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Sam Schellenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) all had two hits apiece.

Junior Ryan Stewart (Detroit, Mich./Parkway Christian HS) belted a two-run homer in the sixth and freshman Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) blasted his first collegiate home run, a solo shot in the top of the ninth.

DeZwaan cranked an RBI triple in the third.

Calvin put seven runs on the board in the top of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead and held the lead the rest of the way.

The Knights scored two in the third, four in the sixth and three in the ninth. Manchester (15-18) closed to within 13-12 with a four-run eighth inning but Calvin's three insurance runs in the top of the ninth proved pivotal.

Sophomore Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) went the final 1.2 innings in relief and gained the win to bum his season record to 1-1.

"Today was a good win against a traditionally solid program," said Calvin baseball coach John Rypel. "Our hitters did not miss fastballs today. We're hoping to keep things going this weekend."

Calvin is scheduled to open up a four-game series with Olivet on Thursday as the Knights will face the Comets on the road in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
