ADRIAN, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team topped Adrian in the battle for third place in the MIAA. The Knights and Bulldogs came into the day at 4-2 in the MIAA tied for third place. Calvin came out on top with a 5-4 victory to secure the No. 3 seed in the MIAA Tournament and a rematch with arch-rival Hope. Calvin finishes the regular season with a 15-5 record and 5-2 mark in MIAA.
"I am very proud of the guys," said head coach John Ross. "It is a big accomplishment to finish in the top-three in the MIAA. We beat a very good Adrian team today. Taking three points in doubles play turned out to be very important."
Freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia / Felipe Palazon) and junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) struck first for Calvin on Saturday with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) downed Jeff Sophiea and Nate Waterbury at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
Junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) and senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) were victorious over Joey Loselle and Brandon Brown at No. 1 doubles, 8-6.
The Bulldogs would get on the scoreboard with a victory at No. 5 singles.
Matt VanWinkle would push the Calvin lead back to three with a victory at No. 2 singles. Beating Brandon Brown, 6-2, 6-3.
Adrian would not back away and would tie the match at four.
Jason Wolters would clinch the victory for the Knights with a three-set thriller at No. 6 singles. Bouncing Kyle Haines, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-2.
Calvin will travel to Hope on May 4 for the MIAA Tournament semifinal match. Adrian will travel to No. 24 Kalamazoo, who claimed the MIAA title with a 7-0 record.
