Calvin Men's Tennis Claims 8-1 Non-Conference Win Over Bethel

Calvin improved to 12-4 with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Bethel College (Ind.) Monday afternoon. The match began outdoors on the Strikwerda Tennis Courts but moved inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center due to inclement weather that moved through Grand Rapids late Monday afternoon.

Calvin swept all three doubles points. Senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) and freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarija, Bolivia./Felipe Palazon) won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

VanWinkle was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles while Afour cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Vroon claimed a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles. Wolters won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Senior Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles.

"We had a good performance," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "I thought we were much sharper than Saturday (5-4 win over Trine). We had to make the transition from outdoor to indoor which is never easy but we kept our focus and played well."

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Olivet at 4 p.m.
