Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin baseball team swept the Olivet comets on Friday afternoon. The Knights started the day with a 10-1 victory in game one and closed the day with a 7-3 victory in game two. Calvin improves to 12-22 on the year and 8-14 in the MIAA. Olivet falls to 5-28 and 2-20 in MIAA play.
"I am very happy with the wins today," said head coach John Rypel. "It is always nice to get a pair of wins. We had some good hitting today and some quality pitching. We have to now get ready for tomorrow."
Olivet struck first in game one with a sacrifice fly from Stephen Botti that scored Luke Spotts.
Calvin would take the lead in the second inning with a double from sophomore Nate DeZwaan, scoring junior Mike Kempton. DeZwaan would then score on an error.
The Knights would put four more runs on the scoreboard in the third inning. Freshman Steven Dogger single down the right-field line, scoring sophomore Ryan Stewart and sophomore Nick Steiginga. Freshman Jonathan Keane scored Nate DeZwaan. Senior Jordan VanderWall scored Dogger on a singles.
In the fifth inning, the Knights tacked on four more runs. Nick Steiginga cleared the bases with a triple that scored freshman Steven Seager, Jordan VanderWall and Jonathan Keane. Steiginga would score when Mike Kempton singled to left field.
The Calvin pitchers had a strong outing in game one, freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt threw six innings and held the Comets to one run. Senior Matt Poolman closed the game in the seventh inning.
Nick Steiginga and Mike Kempton led the Knights with two hits, Steiginga finished with a game-high three RBI.
The Knights jumped on Olivet early in game two. Junior Colton Wolfe doubled through the left side of the infield to score Jordan VanderWall in the first inning.
In the second inning, Steven Dogger doubled to right field, scoring Nate DeZwaan and Mike Kempton. Jordan VanderWall singled through the left side of the infield to score Steven Dogger. Freshman Ryan Lang scored on a bases loaded walk.
Colton Wolfe scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a double, scoring Dogger and DeZwaan.
Olivet tried to chip away at the lead with a run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning.
Jonathan Keane recorded the win for Calvin with five strikeouts. Freshman Logan Walker notched the save and had three strikeouts.
Colton Wolfe finished with a game-high three hits and three RBI.
The two teams meet again on Saturday in Olivet.
