Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team dropped both ends of a home doubleheader Friday afternoon, falling to the Alma Scots 2-1 and 8-0.
In the opener, Alma (19-10 overall, 10-8 MIAA) claimed the win in extra-innings as Scot starter Alex Valasek outdueled Calvin freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS).
Keane tossed shutout ball through five innings, extending his shutout streak to 12 innings dating back to last week. Keane was staked to a 1-0 lead on an two-out RBI double down the left-field line by Calvin sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS). The double brought home junior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS) who reached base on a two-out walk.
Valasek did not allow another hit until the bottom of the sixth, retiring 10 of the next 11 Calvin hitters.
Alma meanwhile tied the game in the top of the sixth on a hit and a pair of Calvin errors. Keane was able to escape further damange by inducing the Scots into a home-to-first double-play with the bases loaded and then getting an inning-ending groundout.
Calvin (10-20 overall, 6-12 MIAA) nearly won the game in the bottom of the seventh as Kempton walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by DeZwaan. With two outs, freshman pinch-hitter Ryan Lang (Bedford, NH/Bedford HS) dropped a looper just over third base that went foul by a foot with Kempton racing home on the play. Lang then popped up to third to end the Calvin threat.
Alma broke through in the top of the eighth, using a walk, a passed ball and a pair of base hits to score the go-ahead run.
With one out, senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) singled to right with one out but was erased moments later on a game-ending double-play on a hard ground ball hit to third by Calvin freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS).
VanderWall had two of Calvin's three hits to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Keane took the hard-luck loss to fall to 2-3 on the year.
With the momentum of a game one win, Alma broke loose for 13 hits in game two to roll to the win.
Calvin had six hits in defeat including three off the bat of sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS). Seager also had two hits in defeat. Freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 1-3 on the season.
Calvin and Alma are scheduled to resume the four-game series on Monday with a doubleheader at Klenk Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
