Hope Turns Tables On Calvin Men's Tennis in Rivalry Dual Match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With a strong momentum shift in singles play, visiting Hope turned the tables on Calvin and handed the Knights a 6-3 dual match defeat Wednesday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts.

Calvin (8-3 overall, 2-1 MIAA) led 2-1 after doubles play but Hope (3-10 overall, 2-0 MIAA) reversed the momentum by taking the opening set in five of the six singles flights. The Flying Dutchmen kept the hammer down, taking five of the six singles flights in straight sets to complete the victory.

Calvin's lone win came at No. 5 singles as Christopher Dausman (Coopersville/Coopersville HS) defeated Sam Kreps 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.

Michael Kiley got things rolling for Hope with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Matt Buesing (Hoffman Estates, IL./Fremd HS) at No. 1 singles while Hope's Mark VanderStoep dropped Calvin's Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph/St. Joseph HS) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

At No. 3 singles, Christian Rhoades of Hope defeated David Brown (Lake Zurich, IL/Lake Zurich HS) 6-2, 6-2 while Andrew Klein of Hope took out Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 4 singles 6-2, 7-5.

Justin Folkert also won at No. 6 singles for Hope, defeating Jason Wolters (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) 6-3, 6-4.

The singles turnaround came after Calvin had grabbed the early momentum in doubles with VanWinkle and Asfour defeating VanderStoep and Rhoades 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while Andrew Airgood (Sturgis/Sturgis HS) and Wolters defeated Folkert and Kreps 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Hope's lone doubles point came at No. 2 doubles with Klein and Kiley defeating Buesing and Brown 9-7.

"Give credit to Hope for stepping up for the win," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "Hope played extremely well in singles and we did not. Hope deserved the victory. We will learn from this and move forward."

Calvin travels to Adrian on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match.
