Box Score 2 ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a doubleheader at league-leading Adrian on Monday, falling by scores of 5-2 and 14-4.
In game one, Calvin (7-14 overall, 3-7 MIAA) outhit Adrian 7-6 but the host Bulldogs (13-7 overall, 8-2 MIAA) capitalized on seven Calvin walks. Adrian scored two runs in the bottom of the first, one in the third and two more in the fifth to give starter Tommy Parsons (5-1) all the run support he would need.
Calvin picked up a run in the fifth on an RBI double by freshman Steven Dogger (Holland/Holland Calvary HS) that plated junior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg/Edwardsburg HS) who had earlier singled. The run by Calvin snapped a scoreless streak of 21.3 innings tossed by Parsons stretched out over the last three games.
Calvin scored another run in the sixth as junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) doubled , advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on a groundout by junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS).
Freshman Clay Franciso (Delton/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) took the loss for Calvin as he went the first 4.0 innings. Junior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) and freshman Luke Walker (Imlay City/Lapeer East HS) also saw time in relief.
Kempton and freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) had two hits apiece in the loss.
In game two, Adrian broke loose for 16 hits and scored six runs in the third and six more in the seventh to pull away for the win.
Calvin had 10 hits in defeat led by senior Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) who went 3-for-5 with a double. Kempton and freshman Jonathon Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) had two hits apiece. Wolfe also reached base three times, twice by base on balls and once on a base hit while driving in one run.
Freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) took the loss for Calvin. Freshman Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, Il./Olympia HS) and freshman Tyler Meyer (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) also saw time in relief.
The two teams will play again on Tuesday at Calvin in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
