SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Calvin men's tennis team improved to 5-2 in 2016 with a win at Spring Arbor on Wednesday. The Knights defeated the Cougars, 5-4.
"Today was a very nice road win," said Calvin head coach John Ross. "We had some very clutch individual wins today. We knew that Spring Arbor was going to be really tough and they were."
The Knights notched two victories in doubles to take an early lead on the road. Senior Matt Buesing and sophomore David Brown defeated Vincent McShane and Tony Mayotte at No. 2 doubles, 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Jason Wolters and freshman Andrew Airgood defeated Thomas Hall and Jacob Byrd, 8-6.
David Brown gave Calvin a 3-1 lead with a victory over Jacob Byrd at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-0.
The Cougars would tie the match at three with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Junior Taylor Asfour would reclaim the lead for Calvin at No. 4 singles, defeating Josh Scott, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Jason Wolters would clinch the match with a victory at No. 6 singles, downing Sam Head, 7-6 (6), 6-3.
The Knights return to action on Saturday when they start MIAA play, hosting Albion.
