Box Score 2 ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin baseball team opened its 2016 MIAA campaign with a doubleheader split at Trine, winning the opener 2-1 before falling in game two 5-2.
Using a new MIAA format, game one was a seven-inning contest while the second game of the doubleheader was a nine-inning affair.
In game one, Trine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first but Calvin tied the score in the second on a run-scoring single by freshman Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) that plated junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) who led off the inning with a double.
Freshman Spencer Yahrmarkt (Sanford/Meridian HS) went 5.1 innings in his first MIAA start, allowing just three hits and striking out two. Senior Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) went the final 1.2 innings and was able to gain the win in relief as the Knights scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh. Kotva reached base on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs/Northpointe Christian HS) and then came around to score on another Trine error.
Trine placed one runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but Wasserberger was able to shut the door to improve to 2-2 on the year. Keane had two of Calvin's three hits in the win.
In game two, Trine (5-7 overall, 1-1 MIAA) scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added an insurance run in the sixth on a home run by Colton Conn. Calvin (5-8 overall, 1-1 MIAA) answered with a run in the top of the seventh as sophomore Nick Steiginga (Mahwah, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) tripled to left and came home a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS).
Steiginga later doubled in the top of the ninth and came home a single by Stewart but Trine was able to get out of the jam with back-to-back lineouts.
Steiginga led Calvin by going 3-for-4 at the plate. Freshman Jimmy Dirksen (Portage/Kalamazoo Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin while freshmen Clay Francisco (Delton/Thornapple-Kellogg HS) and Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) along with junior Patrick Avila (Lakewood, Ca./Valley Christian HS) also saw time in relief.
The two teams are scheduled to complete the four-game series on Monday at Calvin in a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
