Box Score WESTFIELD, Ind. - Calvin dropped a 7-4 non-conference decision at Capital University Saturday afternoon.
The Knights are now 0-4 on the year.
Capital (7-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and limited Calvin to just one hit through the first five innings.
The Knights plated across a pair of runs in the sixth as junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) drove in one run with a double and freshman Steven Seager (Plantation, FL/Plantation HS) drove in another with a ground-out. Capital added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth.
Calvin pushed across its third run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by junior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS). In the ninth, sophomore Ryan Stewart (Detroit/Parkway Christian HS) delivered an RBI triple that brought home sophomore Nate DeZwaan (Holland/Holland Christian HS) but the Knights would not score again.
Junior Sawyer Howard (Atlanta, IL/Olympia HS) took the loss for Calvin in his debut for the Knights. Shane Wellman was the winner for Capital, striking out 12 batters in five innings of work as four Capital pitchers combined to strike out 19 Knights on the day.
Senior outfielder Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) led Calvin at the plate with a pair of hits.
Calvin returns to action on Monday when it faces Utica College in a doubleheader slated to start at 10 a.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
