OLIVET – Calvin split a doubleheader at Olivet on Friday, winning the opener 5-1 before losing the nightcap 6-3.
In the opener, Calvin received a stellar pitching performance from senior Ben Guilfoyle and a huge performance by sophomore Colton Wolfe at the plate.
Guilfoyle (2-3) went six innings to get the win as he scattered seven hits and stranded five base-runners. Meawhile Wolfe went 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of home runs and a double.
Wolfe belted a solo home run in the top of the first and added another solo shot in the seventh. He also ripped a two-run RBI double in the fifth while sophomore Pat Avila smacked an RBI single in the sixth.
Senior Austin Juza pitched a scoreless seventh for the Knights to help preserve the win.
In game two, Calvin (6-12 overall, 3-7 MIAA) held a 2-0 lead through three innings but the host Comets broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fourth and added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth. Calvin scratched across a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by senior Peter Cupery but could do no further damage.
Senior Grant VanPutten had a hit, a walk, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Freshman Nate DeZwaan had a pair of doubles while Wolfe went 2-for-3.
Freshman Mike Wieringa took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Calvin will host the Comets in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
