Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader at Albion

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALBION - Calvin swept a doubleheader at Albion Saturday afternoon, winning game one 8-4 and game two 6-2. The doubleheader sweep moves Calvin into a tie for third place in the MIAA standings with Hope as both teams are 8-8 in league play.

In the opener, Calvin took a 3-0 lead behind run-scoring doubles by freshman Nate DeZwaan and senior Grant VanPutten and a fieling error by the host Britons.

Albion struck back with four runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead off of starter Ben Guilfoyle. Guilfoyle was able to settle in and keep the Britons off the scoreboard over the next two innings however.

Meanwhile Calvin (11-13 overall) scored twice in the top of fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Senior Peter Cupery and sophomore Patrick Avila put back-to-back doubles together to bring in the first run. Avila then moved to third and scored on a passed ball.

Calvin tacked on three insurance runs in the seventh, using three hits, an error and a wild pitch to take an 8-4 lead. Junior Jordan VanderWall had a run-scoring double while Cupery drove in a run on a groundout.

Junior Kyle Wasserberger tossed a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the win and gain the save while Guilfoyle picked up his third win of the season.

Calvin had nine hits in the win with Cupery, VanPutten, Avila, and DeZwaan all collecting two hits apiece.

In game two, Calvin scored three in the second, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to give its pitching staff all the run support it would need.

Cupery started the game on the mound and allowed just one run in three innings. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate while driving in a run. Avila, senior Ben Wohl and DeZwaan all had two hits apiece with Wohl collecting an RBI double.

Freshman Ryan Stewart picked up the win in relief of Cupery with freshman Kyle Vens, senior Austin Juza and Wasserberger also coming on in relief.

"It was a total team effort this weekend," said Calvin head baseball coach John Rypel of his team that took three of four games in the weekend series with Albion. "We received great starts from all four of our starting pitchers this weekend and our bullpen did a great job. Offensively I thought we were very strong on the basepaths and stayed aggressive at the plate, executing on several occassions in two-strike counts."

Calvin stole nine bases in Saturday's doubleheader with VanPutten, Cupery, Wohl and Avila all stealing two bases apiece.

Calvin will host Illinois Tech next Wednesday in a non-conference doubleheader at Calvin slated to start at 2 p.m.
