Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Adrian - Clinches Second Place in MIAA Standings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ADRIAN - The Calvin baseball team gained a doubleheader split at Adrian, dropping the opener 13-4 before coming back to win the nightcap 5-4. With the split, Calvin takes 3 out of 4 games in the weekend series and finishes in second place in the final MIAA regular season standings at 18-10.

The Knights also gain the number-two seed for next week's MIAA Tournament and are scheduled to host number-three seed Hope next Wednesday in the double-elimination tournament. Adrian is the top seed and will host a first round game on Wednesday and then host the remainder of the tournament on Thursday and Friday.

In Saturday's opener, Calvin could not withstand a 15-hit attack by the host Bulldogs (26-13, 21-7 MIAA) who scored eight runs in the fourth inning to vault into a commanding 12-1 lead. Calvin (26-14 overall) scored three runs in the sixth but scored no more after that to drop the lopsided affair.

Senior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the loss in two innings of work to fall to 5-1 on the year as he allowed four runs of which only one was earned.

Calvin collected seven hits - all singles. Sophomore Jalen Bouma (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) had two runs batted in.

In game two, Calvin won its 10th one-run decision of the year as senior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) picked up his second win of the year while sophomore Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) came on to record his first collegiate save.

Calvin took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as senior Matt Schepel (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) doubled in a run and Bouma brought Schepel home with a clutch two-out single.

Adrian scored a run in the second and two more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead but the Knights responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to go up 5-3. Schepel tied the score with an RBI double. Freshman Colt Wolfe (Eaton Rapids/Eaton Rapids HS) brought Schepel home with a double of his own and then scored on another single by Bouma.

Adrian scratched across a run in the fifth to make it a one-run game. With one out in the sixth, Wasserberger came on in relief of VanderWall.  Wasserberger kept the Bulldogs from scoring, leaving the bases full with two outs.

Wasserberger then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the win.

Junior Grant Van Putten (Holland/Holland Christian HS) went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs in the win for Calvin while Schepel and Bouma were both 3-for-4 at the plate as well. Schepel had a pair of doubles to bring his career total to 32 and moving him past former teammate Chris Blacklidge and into first place on the Calvin career list.

Junior Ben Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) also went 3-for-4 in game two, raising his season batting average to .355.
