JOLIET, Ill. – The Calvin men's track and field team had a number of strong performances at the Fighting Chance Invite hosted by University of St. Francis on Saturday as athletes tried to put their names in the mix for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two weeks.
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) did just that on day two of the decathlon by posting a final point total of 6,626 points that set a new personal best and ranks 14th in NCAA III this season, as well as third on the Calvin all-time outdoor top 10 list. Van Baren opened the day with new PRs in both the 110 hurdles (15.12) and discus throw (41.54 meters) on the way to the final score.
On the track,
Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg) ran a personal-best time of 14.45 in the prelims of the 110 hurdles, but the time was too wind-aided (+4.5) to count towards the national list. He followed that with a time of 14.64 in the final that ranks fourth on the Calvin all-time top 10 list.
Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.15, followed by
Jonathan Holloway (Lawton, Mich./Lawton) in eighth in 58.74.
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West) ran a time of 22.68 in the 200 meters.
In the lone field event with Calvin athletes participating,
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield Senior) led three Knights in the discus throw with a top mark of 46.25 meters to finish third.
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West) took fifth with a mark of 43.67 meters, followed by
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) in seventh with a mark of 42.58 meters.
NEXT UP: Calvin track and field will have members of the team competing next week at the last chance meet hosted by Augustana College on May 13-14.
