JOLIET, Ill. – Members of the Calvin University men's track and field team competed at University of St. Francis in the Fighting Chance Invite on Friday looking to improve marks before the NCAA III Outdoor Championships.
In the decathlon,
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) has 3,516 points at the halfway mark, well ahead of his season-best pace, thanks to a 13.11 meter throw in the shot put (first among his competitors), a 6.62 mark in the long jump (second) and a 1.86 meter high jump (third). Van Baren will complete the other five events of the decathlon on day two tomorrow at St. Francis.
Three Knights competed in the high jump, where
Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) jumped 2.0 meters while
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Eric Barancik (Montrose, Mich./Chesaning) jumped 1.97 meters.
In the hammer throw,
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield Senior) recorded a top throw of 45.19 meters and
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) recorded a 39.78 meter throw.
Cody Aardsma (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) ran 1:54.77 800 meter time to take fourth place in his heat.
In the 5000 meters,
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) ran 15th in his heat with a time of 15:08.02.
Brewer Snay (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) finished 11th in a separate heat with a time of 15:43.58, while
Justin Vos (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) ran in 15:48.73.
