National DIII Week Spotlight Conversation With Men's Track and Field Junior Luke Nguyen

The Calvin Sports Information Office recently caught up with Luke Nguyen, a junior on the men's track and field team. The following is a question-and-answer session with the Houston, Texas native (Carl Wunsche Sr.) in celebration of National Division III Week.

Coming out of high school, why did you choose to become a Calvin Knight?

What drew you to the school and the respective sport you are participating in? God chose it for me; I took a visit and realized the opportunity here.

How would you describe your student athlete experience at Calvin?

It has been great, the opportunity to compete in college is such a great privilege, as well as having a great coaching staff that develops you as an athlete.

How would you describe Coach Haldorson and the rest of the Calvin track staff?

How have they helped you in your career as a Calvin student-athlete? Coach Haldorson knows how to run a winning program, and shout out to Coach Graham who mainly coaches me. All I know is we want to win bad around here.

Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?

Pedro Pichardo a Cuban triple jumper, watch that man jump, he's cool and so great, and Will Claye also a historic triple jumper and he gives so much back to community of triple jump.

What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Calvin track team?

The friends I have made, and how serious we take our faith, every day we must show up and carry our cross their will be highs and lows, but as coach Haldorson says we are the same person in victory or defeat.

Academically, what are you majoring in or thinking of majoring in and how do you balance school and athletics? What do you plan to do after graduation?

Operation and Supply Chain Management and Marketing, balancing school and track is not bad honestly, time management is key. Some days track gets more time, someday school has too. I plan to keep doing track chasing USA trials!

Why do you think Division III was the right fit for you?

A smaller institution with lower classroom ration, allows me to excel in academics while creating more personal relationships with professors, and most importantly D3 gave me the chance to compete which gives me a chance to be great.
