National DIII Week Spotlight Conversation With Men's Lacrosse Junior Jordan Warners

The Calvin Sports Information Office recently caught up with Jordan Warners, a junior of the men's lacrosse team. The following is a question-and-answer session with the Orange, California native (Crean Lutheran) in celebration of National Division III Week.

Q: Coming out of high school, why did you choose to become a Calvin Knight? What drew you to the school and the respective sport you are participating in?

I chose to attend Calvin because I wanted a Christian education and to be in an environment surrounded by like-minded individuals. Additionally, lacrosse played a major role in my decision. Coach Hoger made me feel welcomed from the start, and he has built a strong, positive team culture within the Calvin lacrosse program that I wanted to be a part of.

Q: How would you describe your student-athlete experience as Calvin?

Being a student-athlete at Calvin has been a privilege. Having the opportunity to be part of a team and build meaningful friendships is something I truly value. Another enjoyable aspect is supporting other teams, attending their games, and meeting new people across campus.

Q: How would you describe Coach Hoger and the rest of the Calvin lacrosse staff? How have they helped you in your career as a Calvin student-athlete?

Coach Hoger and the entire Calvin lacrosse staff feel like family to me. They are always available to talk, whether it is about lacrosse or personal matters, and they consistently push me to be my best. Their support has helped me stay on track academically while also encouraging me to pursue goals in lacrosse that I never thought were possible.

Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete and why?

My favorite professional athlete is Chris Paul. I grew up playing basketball and have always been a Clippers fan, so I followed his career closely. I admire how, despite being undersized and not the most athletic player, he consistently created opportunities for himself and his teammates. His leadership, consistency, and work ethic have influenced how I approach competition in any sport.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a part of the Calvin lacrosse team?

My favorite part of being on the lacrosse team is game day. I have always loved to compete, and it is rewarding to see the hard work we put in as a team come together during competition.

Q: Academically, what are you majoring in or thinking of majoring in and how do you balance school and athletics? What do you plan to do after graduation?

I am majoring in Finance and minoring in Supply Chain Management. Balancing academics and athletics has been manageable throughout my time at Calvin. My approach is to stay disciplined by keeping up with assignments and preparing for exams ahead of time. One of the benefits of being a Division III athlete is the balance it provides, allowing me to succeed both in the classroom and on the field. After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in business, ideally within investment management.

Q: Why do you think Division III was the right fit for you?

Division III has been the right fit for me because I value being part of a smaller school with a close-knit community. I enjoy having a meaningful role on the team while still competing at a high level. It provides the perfect balance between athletics, academics, and personal development.
