SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. – The Calvin University men's golf team shot one of its best rounds of the season to open the two-day MIAA Spring Finale on Wednesday at Hawkshead GC.
 
The Knights finished the day with a team score of 291 to shoot 3-over par for the round, marking the best score of the season and its second-lowest stroke total.
 
The 291 total was second-best on the day, trailing only Hope College's 290 total, but moved Calvin into first place in the overall MIAA standings past Trine University. The Thunder entered the day two strokes ahead of the Knights at the top of the standings but now trails Calvin by two strokes heading into Thursday's final round after shooting 295 on Wednesday.
 
Matt Turcotte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) and Jack Marzolino (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) are tied for first place individually with two other players at the Spring Finale following matching 2-under par rounds of 70. Marzolino carded five birdies against three bogeys on his round, while Turcotte finished with four birdies and two bogeys.
 
Heading into tomorrow's final round, Turcotte holds a four-stroke lead in the individual conference standings through five of the six conference rounds with an average score of 71.8 on the season.
 
Ethan Tiller (Kalamazoo, Mich./Portage Central) continued his strong spring with an even-par 72 to rank sixth at the Spring Finale, while Ford Erickson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot 79 and is in 29th place.
 
Playing as a wild card entrant, Josiah McClelland (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) shot 2-over par 74 with the help of an eagle on the short par four (310 yards) 11th hole.
 
COACH'S COMMENT: "We did a nice job today," Calvin head coach Brian Bolt said. "We've got another day tomorrow and we are focused on that."
 
NEXT UP: Calvin will close its regular season with the second and final round of the MIAA Spring Finale tomorrow (Thursday, April 30) at Hawkshead GC starting at 9:00 AM.
