RESULTS
ALLENDALE, Mich. – Calvin competed at the GVSU Extra Weekend Invitational on Saturday and came away with several performances that moved their athletes up the MIAA outdoor performance list.
Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore
Alex VanSweden (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS), graduate student
Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS), freshman
Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin HS) and freshman
Gabe Van Goor (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) took eighth in a season-best time of 41.79. The time was just a tenth of a second off Calvin's school record which was set in 1996. It ranks fifth on the MIAA outdoor performance list.
VanderWoude later took 10
th in the 200 meter dash with a personal-best time of 21.46. The time is within shouting distance of Calvin's school record of 21.38 set by Phil Sikkenga in 2000. It ranks 32
nd on the NCAA III outdoor performance list this spring and is the top time in the MIAA this season. Van Goor also placed 20
th in 22.35.
In the 110 high hurdles freshman
Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford HS) was 11
th in a personal-best time of 15.47 with junior
Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) was 12
th in a personal-best time of 15.49 with junior
Lucas Vander Griend (Grand Rapids, Mich./Potter's House) 15
th in a personal-best time of 16.32.
Calvin flashed speed in the 400 meter hurdles with Horton taking sixth in a season-best time of 54.67. Senior
Jonathan Holloway (Lawton, Mich./Lawton HS) was 12
th in the race in a personal-best time of 56.17. Currie was 15
th in a personal-best time of 57.58 with sophomore
Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill HS) 16
th in 57.73.
In the 400 meters, sophomore
Joshua Ahrens (Hoffman Estates, Ill./James B. Conant) was 23
rd in the 400 meters in a personal-best time of 51.66 with junior
Danny Andringa (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) 26
th in a season-best time of 52.10. Freshman
Tait Anible (Lowell, Mich./Saranac HS) was 29
th in a personal-best time of 52.75 with freshman Tristan Naessens 30
th in a personal-best time of 52.84.
In the 800 meters, freshman
Samuel Downing (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East HS) was fourth in a personal-best time of 1:56.41. Freshman
Jonas Church (Wabash, Ind./Wabash HS) was seventh in a personal-best time of 1:58.41. Freshman
Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale HS) was eighth in a personal-best time of 1:58.47. Sophomore
Jaydon Gritters (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) was 12
th in a personal-best time of 1:58.96.
Junior
Koda Brandt (Charlotte, Mich./Charlotte HS) was 17
th in the steeplechase in a season-best time of 10:08.24.
Competing in the pole vault, sophomore
Nathan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 13
th (13-1 ¾). Junior
Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was fifth in the triple jump (41-6) and 13
th in the triple jump (20-1 ½).
Also competing at the Olivet Nazarene Open on Saturday, freshman
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) was fifth in the discus with a personal-best throw of 150-3. His throw ranks fifth in the MIAA. Sophomore
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was sixth (146-4) and freshman
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) ninth (134-4). McCoy was eighth in the shot put with a throw of 45-1 ¾
COACHES COMMENT: "A real good day of competition for our team," said Calvin head track and field coach
Adam Haldorson. "Several personal-bests and some nice moves up our conference performance lists. We are looking forward to competing at our conference meet next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin will compete at the MIAA Championships next Thursday and Friday at Hope College.
