Calvin Women's Heptathletes Score Twice at MIAA Multi-Event Championships

RESULTS

HOLLAND, Mich. – Calvin concluded day two of the MIAA heptathlon competition Tuesday afternoon at Hope College. Calvin scored twice, using a third place finish from sophomore Ella Easterling (Norton, Oh./Norton HS) and a sixth place berth from freshman Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario/Strathroy District Collegiate Institute) to earn nine points in the early team standings.

The heptathlon is a part of the full MIAA Championships competition with the multi-events for the championships taking place just over a week prior to the rest of the meet, scheduled for April 30 and May 1.

Easterling and Schipper were joined in the competition by Calvin sophomore Bella Adams (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS). Adams scored a career-best 3,480 points but finished just outside the top eight. Adams surpassed her previous career-best of 3,152 points set a year ago. Easterling produced a final two-day point total of 3,971 points that was a career-best by nearly 100 points. Schipper earned 3,868 points, less than 50 points off a career-best.

Tuesday's competition begin with the long jump. Easterling took fifth with a leap of 15-10 ½ that earned her 516 points. Adams was seventh at 15-6 ¾ for 490 points. Schipper jumped 15-6 ¼ for eighth place and 487 points.

Schipper placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 80-10 that earned her 376 points. The throw was a personal-best. Adams was sixth at 73-5 for 333 points with Easterling seventh at 73-0 for 331 points.

In the 800 meters, Schipper was sixth in a time of 2:36.54 that earned her 613 points. Adams was eighth in a time of 2:38.59 for 589 points. Easterling was ninth in a career-best time of 2:41.70 that earned her 554 points.

COACHES COMMENT: "It was a solid group of performances that ended up within the range of what we were shooting for," said Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorson. "Bella just missed being in the points but had a career-best performance which was exciting and Ella and Caralee also had career-best point totals. We are looking forward to coming back next week for the rest of the MIAA Championships meet."

NEXT UP: The MIAA Championships are scheduled April 30 and May 1 at Hope. Prior to that, Calvin will compete at Grand Valley on Saturday at the GVSU Extra Weekend Meet at noon.
