HOLLAND, Mich. – A trio of Calvin decathletes helped kick off the MIAA Championships by competing in the opening five events of the MIAA decathlon competition at Hope College.
The decathlon is part of the MIAA schedule of events and will count towards the team scoring at next weekend's full meet – also hosted by Hope College.
Athletes competed in five events – the 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 meters on Monday.

Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg HS) is in second with 3,220 points, 81 points out of first place. Junior
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) is in third with 3,116 points with junior
Jarrett Febus (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) sixth with 2,886 points.
Calvin started off the day strong with Bedford winning the 100 meter dash in 11.43 for 767 points with Van Baren second in 11.64 for 723 points. Febus was seventh in 11.92 for 667 points.
The day continued with Bedford winning the long jump with a career-best leap of 21-8 ¾ that was worth 725 points. Van Baren was fourth at 20-3 ½ for 626 points while Febus had a career-best jump of 19-3 ¼ for 559 points.
Van Baren was second in the shot put (40-4 ¼) for 625 points. Febus was sixth (34-5 ¾) to earn 516 points. Bedford was 11
th at 31-4 ¾ for 460 points.
Van Baren and Bedford were part of a three-way tie atop the high jump list at 5-10 ½ for 619 points apiece. Febus was 11
th at 5-3 ¼ for 472 points.
In the 400 meter dash, Febus had the second-best time in the field of 14 competitors, clocking in at 53.22 for 672 points. Bedford was sixth in a personal-best time of 53.77 for 649 points with Van Baren 12
th in 56.94 for 523 points.
Action continues on Tuesday with events set to begin at 11 a.m. with the 110 high hurdles leading off followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
