GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's track and field team battled cold and blustery conditions to compete well at its own Knight Invitational on Saturday.
Calvin sparkled in the field events. Freshman
Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big day in the pole vault, taking second with a career-best vault of 15-8 ¼ that ranks sixth on the all-time Calvin list as well as 33
rd on the NCAA III Outdoor performance list.
Sophomore
Lucas Jambekar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) took first in the javelin with a career-best throw of 174-2 that ranks No. 1 in the MIAA and 84
th on the NCAA III Outdoor performance list. Older brother
Colin Jambekar (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS), a senior, took seventh (135-1).
Calvin went 1-2-4 in the triple jump led by junior
Luke Nguyen (Houston, Tx./Carl Wunsche Sr.) who claimed the win with a leap of 43-7 1/4 . Freshman
Alex Guidry (Cypress, Tx./Cypress Creek HS) was second (42- 8 ¼) and junior
Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) fourth (39-6 ¾). Ngyuen also placed third in the long jump (20-2 ½).
In the high jump, freshman
Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was second (6-3 ½) with sophomore
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (6-3 ½).
Freshman
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) took third in the discus invite only competition with a throw of 146-6. He also placed sixth in the hammer throw invite only competition with a throw of 156-10 with sophomore
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) close behind in seventh (153-3). Freshman
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) took first in the discus open portion of the meet with a throw of 135-9 and sixth in the shot put (41-10 ½).
On the track, Calvin went 1-2-3 in the 10,000 meters with freshman Lawrence Cubitt (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) first (33:29.95), senior
Gavin Anderson (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park HS) second (33:36.63) and sophomore
Evan Spronk (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian HS) third (33:58.61). In the 5,000 meters, freshman
Ian Reynolds (Littleton, Colo./Denver Christian HS) was second (15:50.68).
Senior
Ryan Sarkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair HS) had a great race in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, winning in a time of 9:40.04 that ranks 40
th nationally and No. 1 in the MIAA. Freshman
Kyler Dale (Urbana, Ind./Manchester Jr.) was fifth (10:15.79).
Calvin went 1-2 in the 110 high hurdles with freshman
Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford HS) first (16.24) and junior
Lucas Vander Griend (Grand Rapids, Mich./Potter's House) second (16.73). Calvin went 2-3 in the 800 meters with sophomore
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) second (2:00.24) and freshman
Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale HS) third (2:01.52). Freshman
Cody Aardsma (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian HS) was sixth in the 1500 meters (4:10.95). Freshman
Tait Anible (Lowell, Mich./Saranac HS) fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:01.00).
Calvin also had a strong showing in the 200 meters with sophomore
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich. /Traverse City West) third (22.23), sophomore
Alexander Nelson (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill HS) fourth (22.40) and sophomore
Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill HS) eighth (22.98).
COACHES COMMENT: "A good day for our team despite the weather not always being ideal but that's also collegiate track and field," said Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson. "Our thought our team showed enthusiasm, supported each other and many strong performances. We are always grateful to have the opportunity to compete at home and today was no different."
NEXT UP: A group of Calvin decathletes will compete at the MIAA Multi-Event Championships next Monday and Tuesday at Hope College with competition set to start each day at 11 a.m.
