Calvin Men's Track and Field Closes Out Competition at GVSU Al Owens Classic

RESULTS

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Calvin came up with a strong set of performances on day two of the GVSU Al Owens Classic.

Calvin sophomore Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was a highlight on the track as he placed sixth in the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 14:48.89. His time ranks 39th in NCAA Division III this spring. Senior Ryan Sarkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair HS) was 14th in a personal-best time of 15:20.87 with junior Pierce Bentley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Otsego HS) 16th (personal-best time of 15:23.90), sophomore Justin Vos (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) 26th (personal-best time of 15:32.87). Sophomore Brewer Snay (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North HS) was 28th (15:33.80).

In the 800 meters, freshman Cody Aardsma (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian HS) was 14th in a personal-best time of 1:55.68. Freshman Samuel Downing (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East HS) was 37th in a personal-best time of 1:59.46. In the 1500 meters, Kyler Dale (Urbana, Ind./Manchester Jr.) was 25th in a personal-best time of 4:03.14.

In the 110 high hurdles, sophomore Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton-Kellogg HS) had a career-best time of 14.94 in the prelims with junior Zach VanBaren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) clocking in with a season-best time of 15.07 in the prelims. In the finals, Bedford was sixth (15.04) and VanBaren seventh (15.10).

Senior Jonathan Holloway (Lawton, Mich./Lawton HS) was 11th in the 400 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 56.93. Sophomore Will Richardson (Stockton, Md./Snow Hill HS) was 16th in a career-best time of 57.22. Freshman Nolan Viviano (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower HS) was 17th in 57.68, freshman Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford HS) 19th in a career-best time of 57.86 and freshman Tait Anible (Lowell, Mich./Saranac HS) 22nd in a career-best time of 58.77.

In the 100 meter dash, freshman Gabe Van Goor (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) led the way, placing 13th in 10.96. Junior Danny Andringa (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) had Calvin's best time in the 200 meters, placing 35th in 23.15.

Graduate student Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) was fifth in the 400 meters in a season-best time of 49.22. Sophomore Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West) was 12th in a season-best time of 50.47 with senior Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) 13th (50.87), sophomore Alexander Nelson (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill HS) 17th in a personal-best time of 51.32 and Andringa 22nd in a season-best time of 52.43.

Calvin had a strong effort in the 4x100 meter relay as the team of sophomore Alex Van Sweden (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg HS), VanderWoude, Habers and Lubberts took seventh in a season-best time of 42.48. It's top 4x400 meter relay team of VanderWoude, Habers, Nelson and Holloway took fourth in 3:23.91.

In the field events on Saturday, freshman Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) was eighth in a career-best throw of 154-0 that ranks 38th in Division III this spring. Sophomore Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was 18th (143-11), freshman James McCoy () 23rd (137-6) and VanBaren 30th (118-5). McCoy was sixth in the shot put (47-3 ½) with junior Ben Ernstes (Kalamazoo, Mich./Otsego HS) 18th in a career-best throw of 39-6 ¾.

Freshman Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) took sixth in the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-7 that ranks 24th in Division III this spring. Sophomore Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 10th in 6-1 1/4.
 
In the long jump, junior Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley HS) was eighth (21-6 ¼), freshman Paul Hubbard (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) 12th (20-11 ¾), junior Luke Nguyen (Houston, Tx./Carl Wunsche Sr. HS) 14th (20-9), Bedford 16th (20-7) and freshman Alex Guidry (Houston, Tx./Cypress Creek HS) 21st (20-0 ¼).

Freshman Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fifth (14-10) in the pole vault with sophomore Nathan Bengelink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) 14th (13-4 ¼) and Van Baren 17th (12-10 ¼).

Calvin will now break until next week with a select group of athletes competing at the Brian Clay Invitational in California next Thursday and Friday while others will compete next Saturday in the Calvin Invitational located inside the Gainey Athletic Complex.
