Calvin's Abe VanDuinen Nears Nationals Berth With 800 Meter Dash Record Race

RESULTS

WAVERLY, Ia. – A record-setting performance by sophomore Abe VanDuinen in the 800 meter dash will likely serve as his ticket to next weekend's NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Competing at the Wartburg Late Qualifier Invitational on Saturday, VanDuinen raced his way to a first place time of 1:52.89, breaking his previous Calvin indoor record of 1:53.65 set last month. The time places VanDuinen 16th on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field performance list and places him in strong position to qualify for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships with the field set to announced early Sunday evening.

Also competing for the Calvin men on Saturday were sophomore Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Sam Abdalla (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) in the high jump. The two Calvin jumpers tied for fourth, clearing the bar at 6-4.

NEXT UP: The NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships field is set to be announced Sunday night at approximately 6 p.m. (ET).
