Calvin Women's Track & Field Continues Opening Weekend of Outdoor Campaign

The Calvin women's track and field continued its opening weekend of the outdoor track and field season, competing at the Emory Thrills in the Hills Invitational and at the North Central College Distance Fling on Friday.

NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE DISTANCE FLING (Results) 
NAPERVILLE, Ill. – Calvin's distance runners had a sterling day of performances. Freshman Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) led a 1-9 finish in the 1500 meters, winning the race in 4:51.89 while freshman Summer Myhren (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills HS) was ninth (5:13.13).

Calvin went 1-2-9-10 in the 5000 meters led by junior Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect HS) who captured the race in a time of 17:44.13. Freshman Ayla Holben (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) was right behind in second (17:45.66). Sophomore Brooklyn Springvloed (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) was ninth (1:17.73) and junior Lily Harsevoort (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) 10th (19:32.39).

In the 10,000 meters, sophomore Alexis Ball (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) had a big race, placing fourth in a time of 37:17.54. Freshman Brynn Ellenbecker (Commerce, MI/Walled Lake Northern) was fifth (37:27.98), sophomore Jonathah Bouwman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Chrsitian HS) sixth (38:22.26), graduate student Alaina Smith (Sterling, Ill./Seoul Foreign School) ninth (38:55.81) and senior Mackenzie Schilthuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) 11th (40:35.71).

EMORY THRILLS IN THE HILLS INVITATIONAL (Results)

ATLANTA, Ga. – Calvin concluded day two of the Emory Thrills in the Hills Invitational in strong fashion.

Friday marked the conclusion of the two-day, seven-event heptathlon competition. Competing in a field of 17, freshman Caralee Schipper (Mount Brydges, Ontario Strathroy/District Collegiate Institute ) was 10th with 3,927 points in her first-ever heptathlon. Sophomore Ella Easterling (Norton, Oh./Norton HS) was 11th (3,837 points) and sophomore Bella Adams (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) 16th (3,051 points).

Schipper had a mark of 16-1 ¾ in the long jump, threw the javelin 64-8 and ran 2:34.25 in the 800 meters. Easterling had a long jump of 14-9 ½, a javelin throw of 75-2 and an 800 meter time of 2:49.14. Adams went 16-4 ¾ in the long jump, did not compete in the javelin and ran 2:46.08 in the 800 meters.

In the hammer throw, junior Mikah Bazuin (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center HS) was eighth (137-8) and sophomore Lily Burns (Dexter, Mch./Dexter HS) 12th (125-11). Burns added a 14th place finish in the javelin (76-2).

In the high jump, freshman Natalie Hensen (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield HS) was fourth (5-2 ¼) sophomore Ava Epley (Commerce Charter Township, MI/Walled Lake Northern) 10th (4-10 ¼) and sophomore Gabi Kempf (Macomb, MI/Lutheran North) 14th (4-8 ¼).

Freshman Dasha Mason (Graham, WA/Graham Kapowsin) continued her stellar form in the triple jump, taking second with a leap of 38-8 ¼ that ranks second on the early NCAA III Outdoor Performance list. Sophomore Alina Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was 11th (35-10 ¾), senior Julienne Strydom (Meyerton, South Africa) 12th (35-8 ¼) and freshman Emily DeJonge (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) 22nd (32-6 ¼).

On the track, freshman Abby Lambers (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) sparkled in her 400 meter hurdles debut, taking third ina  time of 1:04.38 that ranks seventh on the NCAA III Outdoor performance list. Sophomore Audrey Howell (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) was 17th in 1:13.46.

Calvin cooked in the 200 meter dash. Freshman Alison Bailey (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey HS) was 13th (25.54), sophomore Jessica Bossenbroek (Holt, Mich./Holt HS) 23rd (26.11), senior Mia DeJonge (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) 27th (26.42), freshman Kaitlyn DiMaggio (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn HS) 29th (26.56), sophomore Cadence Drougal (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) 30th (26.65) and sophomore Emerson Nordbeck (Livonia, Mich./Franklin HS) 33rd (26.81).

In the 1500 meter invite race, sophomore Kenedi Wood (Comstock Park, Mich./Sparta HS) was ninth (4:50.03). 

In the 4x400 meter relay, Calvin's A' relay team of Lambers, Nordbeck, Bossenbroek and Bailey took fourth in 3:57.54. Calvin's B' relay team of freshman Lola Davey (Cedar Springs, Mich./Rockford HS), sophomore Peyton Ludwig (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS), Hensel and Howell took eighth in 4:09.66.
