ATLANTA, Ga. –
Rhys Bedford and
Zach Van Baren of the Calvin University men's track and field team competed in the decathlon event of the Thrills in the Hills meet at Emory University on Thursday.
Five of the 10 events of the decathlon took place on Thursday, with Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg) closing the day in fourth place while Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) was in 16th place.
Bedford closed the day with 3,216 points thanks to five finishes in the top 10 among the 16 athletes competing. He took second in the long jump (6.61 meters), fourth in the 100 meters (11.31), seventh in the high jump (1.74 meters), eighth in the shot put (10.05 meters) and 10th in the 400 meters (54.13).
Van Baren started with three strong events, winning the shot put with a throw of 12.88 meters before taking sixth in the long jump (6.23 meters) and seventh in the 100 meters (11.45). After not recording a height in the high jump, he did not compete in the 400 meters to fall to 16th place overall with 2,060 points.
NEXT UP: The decathlon competition at the meet will continue with the final five events tomorrow (Friday, March 27) at Emory. The Calvin track and field team also has more athletes competing at Emory on Friday and Saturday, while others will compete at North Central College (Ill.).
