ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The tournament trail for the Calvin ACHA D1 hockey team came to an end Monday afternoon at the Centene Community Center as the Knights fell to No. 2 Ohio University 4-0 in an ACHA Division I National Tournament semifinal game.
The loss concludes an eventful post-season run by the Knights that saw them upset the No. 6 and No. 3 seeds in the tournament while reaching the national semifinals at the ACHA Division I level for the first time in program history.
Calvin entered the tournament seeded No. 11 and knocked off No. 22 Rhode Island 5-0 in the first round and followed with a 4-3 overtime win over No. 6 Drury in the second round. Calvin then scored the upset of the tournament, knocking off No. 3 Niagara 6-2 in the quarterfinals before bowing to Ohio Monday afternoon.
Calvin (23-9-2) fell behind 1-0 as Ohio scored on a goal-mouth scrum just 1:23 into the contest. Luc Reeve was credited with the goal for the Bobcats. The Ohio lead became 2-0 on a goal by Will Cohen with 7:28 left in the opening period.
Neither team scored in the second period but the Knights nearly cut the deficit in half in the opening four-and-a-half minutes of the third. Senior
Krzyzstof Petryla and sophomore
Hayden Zimmerman got loose on a 2-on-2 rush up the ice. Petryla was able to feed Zimmerman crashing for the goal. Zimmerman redirected the pass into the net with the goal coming off its moorings. Zimmerman's scoring chance was waved off initially due to the goal coming loose. A subsequent video challenge was not enough to overturn the call, keeping the game 2-0.
Ohio's Drake Albers gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead with 3:48 left, shaking free from a Calvin check along the boards and whipping in a quick shot off a feed in front. Gavin Keller then scored an empty net goal for Ohio to seal the win.
Ohio held a 31-21 shots on goal advantage including 13-4 in the opening period. Calvin outshot the Bobcats 9-6 in the third period.
Sophomore
Aidan Feddema had 27 saves in goal for the Knights.
Monday's contest concluded Calvin's sixth ACHA Division I National Tournament appearance in the last seven years.
COACHES COMMENT: "At this moment we're filled with 'what if's' and 'what could have beens' but as time passes we'll look back on this season with nothing but amazement and pride," said Calvin head coach
Josh Petrusma. "Our seniors are incredible and though I will miss them next year, I'm so grateful that they got to experience this run. We have such a special team culture, which they helped to build. It will be the foundation of everything to come. We're just getting started."
