ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin University men's indoor track and field continued its build up towards the MIAA Indoor Championships with a strong showing at the Mrs. G Invitational hosted by Trine University on Friday.
The Calvin men recorded one first-place finish as well as three results that landed in the Calvin indoor all-time top 10 list.
The win came early in the meet from
Abe VanDuinen (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater), who won the mile in a time of 4:19.51 that ranks fifth in the MIAA this season.
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) finished third in 4:23.38, followed by
Pierce Bentley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Otsego) in ninth in 4:37.68.
Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) was the first to post a new time in the Calvin indoor top 10 with a fourth-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.62 that ranks fifth on the all-time list.
Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford) finished eighth in a time of 8.81.
Continuing on the track,
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West) took fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 22.67 that jumped him into second place on the all-time Calvin list and third in the MIAA this season.
Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) finished 16th in that race in 23.42.
In the 400 meters, Habers led five Calvin runners in the top 10 with a time of 51.27 that took second place.
Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison),
Nolan Viviano (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower), Joshua Aherns (Hoffman Estates, Ill./James B. Conant) and
Caleb Baker (Indianapolis, Ind./Heritage Christian) finished fourth (51.29), sixth (54.23), eighth (54.64) and ninth (54.72), respectively. The Calvin 'A' 4x400 relay team of
Kaiden Boyce (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey), Viviano,
Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale) and
Alexander Nelson (Snow Hill, Md./Snow Hill) later finished second in 3:26.03, a time that ranks 10th on the all-time Calvin list.
Brewer Snay (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North/Oakland University) finished second in the 3000 meters in a time of 9:06.66 and was followed by
Justin Vos (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) and
Ian Reynolds (Littleton, Colo./Denver Christian) in the top 10.
Samuel Downing (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) led the Knights with a 12th-place finish in the 800 meters in 2:05.32, followed by Meyer in 13th place (2:05.9) and
Caleb Drnek (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) in 15th (2:06.26).
In the field events,
Carter Dimsdale (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest Christian) had the top finish in fifth place in the triple jump with a top mark of 12.42 meters.
Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian) took seventh with a mark of 12.08 meters.
Zach Hartemink (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) took sixth in the pole vault with a top height of 4.33 meters, followed by
Phinehas House (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) in 14th with a height of 3.93 meters.
Eric Barancik (Montrose, Mich./Chesaning) finished sixth with a height of 1.86 in the high jump, followed by
Zachariah Rubingh (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) in 14th place with a jump of 1.7 meters.
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) took 14th place in the shot put with a top mark of 12.7 meters.
Aven Kaat (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) finished 23rd in the long jump with a top jump of 5.58 meters.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Good work day for our men's team," Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson said. "Some event wins, top 10 marks and some good steps forward. We still have some work to do in order to be ready for the MIAA indoor championships, but this team has the pieces to walk away as championships. Should be a fun next few weeks!"
NEXT UP: The Calvin track and field team will return to action on Friday, February 13, when it competes at both Grand Valley State University and Aquinas College.
