ANGOLA, Ind. – The Calvin men's track and field team widened its lead at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday on the campus of Trine University. The Knights crowned a pair of event champions and flashed strong depth to build a team score of 75 points through six completed events in the 17 event competition. Calvin entered Friday with a two-point lead over Hope, having scored 15 points in the heptathlon competition the week before. After Friday, the Knights have a 30-point lead over the Flying Dutchmen.
Calvin was powered by the high jump and triple jump events Friday afternoon. The high jump provided plenty of excitement as the Knights swept the top three spots and placed four individuals in the top six. Sophomore
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the competition with a school record leap of 6-7 ½, breaking the previous record of 6-6 ¾ set by Matt Christians in 2011. Coffey cleared a pair of clutch jumps to stay in scoring range in the competition. Barancik had clutch clearances at 6-2 ¾, 6-5 and again at 6-6 ¼ to at one point, move into the lead. Vandenbroek took the title however with his school record clearance on his second attempt at 6-7 ½. He was able to go for the school record after coming up with a clutch clearance of his own at 6-6 ¼ after missing on his first two attempts.
