Calvin Women's Lacrosse Picks Up Win Over Grove City in Home Opener

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team continued its early stretch of the season with a 11-9 victory over Grove City in its home opener.

The Knights got out to a hot start when senior Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt) scored the first goal of the day just three minutes into play. The Wolverines evened the score just one minute later before a goal from senior Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) once again gave the Knights an edge. A goal from Grove City with five minutes left on the clock tied the score at 2-2 however, Calvin seemed to their groove as sophomore Delaney Johnson (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) and Booher each found the back of the net to give the Knights a two-goal lead after the first fifteen minutes of play.

Calvin capitalized on a man-up opportunity to start the second period when Johnson netted her second goal of the day before three straight goals from Grove City sent the teams into halftime tied at 5-5.

In the third period, the Knights outscored Grove City 3-1 to take a two-goal lead before extending it in the fourth when Booher and Johnson added to their totals. The Wolverine tried to make a late push when they scored three goals late in day but it wasn't enough as the Knights walked away with the 11-9 victory to improve to a 3-2 overall record.

Booher and Johnson each finished the game with four goals while Bethard, Jessica Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich./Western Michigan Christian), and Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) each chipped in one. Booher and Eenigenburg had two assists apiece while senior Natalie Scott (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) finished with a team high four ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, junior Hannah Rizzo (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) finished the day with eleven saves.

COACHES COMMENTS: "The team played well today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "Grove City is a very well coached team that will punish you for the smallest mistake. They exploited some of our weaknesses and gave us some things to work on moving forward."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Thursday, March 5th when they welcome Bethel University to Zuidema Field for a 5 PM match up.
