ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin University men's indoor track and field team finished up its final competition before next week's conference championship on Friday at Grand Valley State University for the GVSU Tune-Up meet.
The Calvin men recorded nine new all-time Calvin Indoor top 10 entries at the event to go with a number of strong finishes and personal best marks.
One of the strongest groups of the day for Calvin was in the throwing events, where
Carson Arnould (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West) led the Knights in the weight throw with a top mark of 17.02 to take seventh place while moving him into fourth place on the Calvin top 10 list.
Alex Lutgring (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield Senior) was right behind him in eighth with a throw of 16.32 that ranks fifth on the Calvin list, while
James McCoy (University City, Mo./Lutheran High School North) took 10th (14.69) and
Samuel Lamsma (Lakewood, Colo./Denver Christian) finished 14th (11.79).
McCoy also led the Knights in fifth place in the shot put with a personal-best mark of 14.63 meters that keeps him in fifth place in the Calvin top 10.
Jack Jin (Wyoming, Mich./The Potters House) took 13th with a mark of 11.27 meters.
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Eric Barancik (Montrose, Mich./Chesaning) finished 2-3 in the high jump with heights of 1.95 and 1.9 meters, respectively, with Barancik's mark of 1.9 tying him for eighth-place on the Calvin top 10 list.
Zachariah Rubingh (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) took sixth at 1.65 meters.
Paul Hubbard (Southfield, Mich./Birmingham Groves) led five Calvin athletes in the top 11 in the long jump with a top jump of 6.29 meters to take third place.
Aven Kaat (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) finished fifth (6.04 meters),
Carter Dimsdale (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest Christian) finished eighth (5.97 meters),
Aidan Veltkamp finished 10th (5.72 meters) and
Devon Heckathorn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) took 11th (5.69 meters). Veltkamp also finished fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 12.17 meters.
On the track,
Gavin Currie (Ada, Mich./Rockford) made the final and finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65, good for sixth on the Calvin top 10 list.
Nolan Viviano (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower) finished 10th (9.13) and
Lucas Vander Griend (Grand Rapids, Mich./The Potters House) took 11th (9.15).
Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) led two new entries into the Calvin top 10 list in the 200 meters. Shoup took seventh in a time of 22.69 that ranks third all-time at Calvin, while
Lincoln Fox (Comstock Park, Mich./Kenowa Hills) finished in 23.14 to take 11th place at the event and move into a tie for ninth on the Calvin top 10.
Kaiden Boyce (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey) finished in 18th place in 23.43.
In the 800 meters,
Cody Aardsma (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) finished 10th in 1:55.92, which ranks sixth on the Calvin top 10 list.
Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) finished 12th (1:59.56),
Jackson Meyers (Grand Haven, Mich./Allendale) took 13th (1:59.72), and
Jaydon Gritters (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) and
Caleb Drnek (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) finished 15th (2:01.5) and 17th (2:02.93), respectively.
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) led the biggest group of Calvin runners on the track in the mile, placing sixth in a time of 4:17.18 that ranks 10th on the Calvin top 10 list.
Pierce Bentley (Kalamazoo, Mich./Otsego) finished 12th, while
Jonas Church (Wabash, Ind./Wabash),
Jack DeKruyter (Holland, Mich./Zeeland West),
Samuel Downing (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East),
Kyler Dale (Urbana, Ind./Manchester Jr.),
Caden Guffey (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) and
Brady Vroom (Cedar Lake, Ind./Illiana Christian) also placed in the top 20.
Gabe Van Goor (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston) led the Knights in 12th place in the 60 meters in a time of 7.1, followed by Shoup (7.19) in 15th place and
Max Huizinga (Hudsonville, Mich./Calvin Christian) in 18th (7.34).
Jonathan Holloway (Lawton, Mich./Lawton) took 11th in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 52.16. Viviano (52.58) followed in 14th place, as well as
Joshua Ahrens (Hoffman Estates, Ill./James B. Conant) in 16th (52.83) and
Levi Harris (Battle Creek, Mich./Pennfield) in 19th (52.98).
Justin Vos (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) finished 16th in the 3000 meters in 8:59.3, followed by
Ryan Sarkett (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) in 18th in a time of 9:00.34.
COACH'S COMMENT: "Today was meant to be a final tune up prior to MIAA Indoors and a final opportunity for indoor races for those not competing next week," Calvin head coach
Adam Haldorson said. "I'm happy to say that people made the most of their competitive opportunities and we saw a bunch of huge performances! Special shout out to our men's throws squad, where almost everyone hit personal records and climbed up the conference standings. This team is ready and primed for some big stuff next week."
NEXT UP: Calvin track and field will return to action on Friday, February 27, when it starts the two-day MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Trine University.
