ALMA, Mich. – Calvin put together a solid day one of competition at the first MIAA Indoor Multi-Event Championships Monday at Alma College.
Through one day of competition of the (seven event) heptathlon, Calvin has three individuals in the top eight with junior
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) leading the list with a first place total of 2,897 points. Sophomore
Rhys Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg HS) is fifth (2,363), junior
Bob Horton (Rockford, Mich./Rockford HS) seventh (2,328) and freshman
Kaiden Boyce (Petoskey, Mich./Petoskey HS) 11
th (2,008 points).
Van Baren had a strong all-around day, placing fourth in the 60 meter dash (7.36), first in the long jump (21-4 ¾), first in the shot put (45-7) and first in the high jump (6-2 ¾). With three events left on Tuesday, Van Baren has a 388 point lead over his closest competitor.
Bedford was third in the 60 meter dash (7.36), fifth in the long jump (19-9), ninth in the shot put (32-3 ¾) and fifth in the high jump (5-6 ½).
Horton won the 60 meter dash (7.22), was eighth in the long jump (18-6), seventh in the shot put (33-7 ¼) and sixth in the high jump (5-5 ¼).
Three events are left in the competition with Tuesday events including the 60 meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000 meter run.
Monday's competition is a part of the final MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with the bulk of the meet set for February 27 and 28 at Trine University.
The pentathlon serves as the opening event of the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
